Third Grade Newsletter- November 2008

Your children come to school ready and eager to learn. They are always amazed at how fast time goes in third grade! Here are a few highlights for November.

Math- The children will be starting Unit 4- Multiplication and Division. Please review the facts as they are presented with your child each evening. The class will be using the area model to count columns and rows (arrays) and then proceeding with the multiplication. Games listed in the student reference book may be played at any time to review skills. Your child has a deck of Everyday Math cards in his/her binder.

Science- The children will soon have the first science test. The test covered metric measurement including weight (grams and kilograms), length (centimeters and meters), volume (milliliters and Liters), and temperature (degrees Celsius). The tools needed to measure each unit should also be reviewed. These include meter tape or meter stick, balance and gram weights, beakers, graduated cylinders, and syringes, and thermometers. The next unit the third grade will study is all about water.

Social Studies- The class is soon having a test on prairies and forests. We will then be studying mountains and deserts and the animals that live in each habitat. Then the class moves to our first Native American tribe, the Kwakiutl. They will be learning how these people met the three basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. The class will also learn about the northwest art form of woodcarving. I will be sharing some of my personal art with the children as we study this tribe. Please send in an empty cereal box as soon as you can, we’ll be using them in social studies.

Language Arts- The children will continue the study of possessive nouns, irregular and plural nouns, and sentence combining. The class will then move into a study of all types of verbs. The stories that will be read are “Web Wonders”, “Moses Goes to a Concert”, “The Little Painter of Sabana Grande” and “The Banza”, a Junior Great Books selection.
