Survey of Popular Music

This class will explo= re the evolution of popular music, from the songwriters of Tin Pan Alley through t= he rock era of the 1960’s.  Students will learn to recognize, understand and apply the unique characteristics of each musical style.

 

Format

·        Introduction: What elements are unique to this musical style? How was this musical style influenced by what was happening in the world at the time?

·        Analysis: How does it differ musically from previous styles?

·        Listening: What does the music sound like? What were the landmark songs of each style?  How do I recognize this style?

·        Theory:  How do I write a song in this style?  What skills do I need = to be able to create in this style?
