Sixth Grade Science Requirements

 

 

Areas of Study:

 

1.      Safety in Science

2.      Collection and Analysis of Data

3.      Identifying Limits and Diversity

4.      Properties of the Physical World

5.      Properties of the Biological World

6.      Technology in the Sciences

                       

 

Course Schedule: The class will consist of

 

1.      Lecture – you will need to take notes on the material presented in class.

2.      Homework – outside of class work will be assigned on a regular basis.  This may include research, worksheets, problem sets, etc.

3.      Labs – experimentation will be done for each section presented. Lab write-ups and questions are part of the lab grade.

4.      Tests/Quizzes – there will be evaluations periodically. A schedule of dates for these evaluations will be given. 

 

 

Preparation for Class:

1.      Read the schedule to see what is needed for the day.

2.      Be on time for class: Come in, find a seat, and get materials out for the class.

3.      Bring your notebook and textbook to all classes

4.      Be prepared when you are in class. Make sure you have a writing device, paper and simple calculator.

 

 

Class procedures:

 

1.      Listen to the material presented

2.      Write important points in your notebook

3.      Copy homework assignments

4.      In labs you may be asked to work with others. Do so quietly and efficiently. Share the work. Do not let one person do it all.

5.      Labs will have extra rules and precautions. Listen carefully so that it is a safe experiment.

6.      Clean up your area before you leave especially after a lab.

Grading Scale and Late Work:

 

1.      Each schedule will have a grading scale attached as a percentage of Tests and Quizzes, Lab Activities, Homework and Projects.

 

2.      Late Work – Work is due on the date assigned. Absences, not Excuses will be discussed. Late work will be handled as follows:

 

                                    Turned in before the next class – one grade reduction

                                    By the second class – two grade reduction

                                    Three days late – F (This is not a zero)

                                    Failure to hand in work -  0 (These are very difficult to make

                                    up)

             

Classroom conduct:

                       

1.      Students will be expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner in out of class.

2.      You are to follow the guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook, under Rules and Regulations.

 

 

Helpful ideas:

 

1.      Read schedule and note important dates i.e. homework, tests, etc.

2.      Keep up with the reading in the text

3.      Do not rely strictly on the notes for the tests, study from the book as well

4.      Ask questions if you are unsure of the material

5.      Start homework early so that you can ask questions if needed

6.      Listen to the review for a test

If you have any problems/questions etc. see me after class, before     

school, study hall if the time works or after school. Help is available.
