Fourth Grade Newsletter

It has been a very busy two months in fourth grade. The students are excited about the different and new things they are learning.

In math, we have studied about place value and big numbers. We have read about places like Washington, D.C. and have discussed how different numbers are used there. Some of the students have joined the new group, the Math Roundtable, which is led by Mr. Morrow. He helps them with their problem solving skills as they solve various math problems. A visitor from Commerce Bank will be coming in November to show the students how to keep a checkbook. This is an extension to our math study on adding and subtracting decimals. Keep practicing those multiplication facts! The children will need them as we start division soon.

In social studies, we have started our study of the United States regions by reading and learning about the Southeast. The plantation models the children made are wonderful! They truly represent plantation life. After the Southeast, we will be learning about the Northeast.

The science unit we are studying consists of living organisms. We have started with plants and have determined the best environment for various plants. In a few weeks, we will be getting beetles and isopods. The students will be determining the proper environment for them as well.

Language Arts consists of spelling, reading, writing, and grammar. Most of the time, all of individual subjects are combined in our writing pieces. We have been reading the book Because of Winn Dixie and will watch the movie to compare the two.

Mrs. Barmore’s Fourth Grade Newsletter

WOW! This year has been really busy and a lot of fun. The students are continuing to work, even as the holidays approach quickly.

In math we have started chapter 5, which involves solving multiplication and place value problems. After Christmas break, the students will begin division. Again, if the method we use is confusing to you, please send a note and I will be happy to go over it again or send home an example.

Social studies has focused mainly on the Northeast states. The students created cotton plantations as a culminating activity for the Southeast states. We have been studying the history of the Northeast states and will soon begin studying the Midwest states.

In science, we have finished our unit on living environments. The next unit we will begin is on levers and pulleys. The students will be able to make their own invention after Christmas break.

In language arts, the students have finished writing a report on Children Working, which went along with a unit we were studying in social studies. We have also begun to read the novel “the Whipping Boy”. The students seem to enjoy this story and always ask if they can read ahead!

In computers, Excel was briefly discussed. The students went around to the other Lower School classrooms and took a survey, which they then turned into an Excel graph. If you have time, take a look at them in the hallway by our room.

Have a great and relaxing holiday break. See you next year!!
